How to prepare for chemistry placement test?

I just started college as a mech engineering major. I'm required to take a chemistry placement test before I can sign up for General Chemistry. I'm at a California state university, but I gather similar tests are used across the country.

Any suggestions on a good resource to use for review? I took high school chemistry, but it's been three years. A web search turns up practice questions, but I could benefit from a book/website/videos etc with nice presentation.

Do they have old tests for use as practice, or old final exams of the lower level course that you will be put into if you get a low score on the placement test? Those would be the most applicable practice tests. If not…

The SAT subject test in chemistry is supposed to cover high school level chemistry that is often a prerequisite for typical college chemistry courses. You may want to check the practice questions here: [Chemistry Subject Test - SAT Chemistry Practice Questions & Tests](<a href=“The SAT – SAT Suite | College Board”>The SAT – SAT Suite | College Board)

The AP test in chemistry is supposed to cover more advanced material that some colleges accept in lieu of a semester of college chemistry. If you want to check your knowledge of this material, check the practice questions here: [AP Central - The AP Chemistry Exam](<a href=“Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board”>AP Chemistry Exam – AP Central | College Board)

A web search for “chemistry book on-line” or something similar should reveal several free on-line chemistry textbooks.

Thanks, I’ll check those out. I looked at reviews of some of the test prep books on Amazon, and noticed that some varied from year to year. For example the Princeton AP Chemistry guide got really high reviews one year, but really low the following year. Apparently the reason was that the College Board significantly reorganized the AP Chem test, and the guide book didn’t keep up with the changes. This got me to wondering if and how the usual college chem placement test might differ from, say, the SAT and AP chemistry tests. For sure looking at old tests would be a good place to start if I can get ahold of them.

Khan Academy has a pretty decent video series on introductory chemistry. That would be a good place to get some review in. I’m not sure if they have any practice problems for chem there though. I’m guessing they don’t, but they might have changed it.
