How to present unique extracurriculars?

I've been heavily involved in politics since I was 13. I've managed a state assembly campaign, worked on a presidential campaign (this past summer - in a different state, paid), and done a huge amount on these campaigns. Not just door-to-door and making phone calls, but actually shouldering real responsibility.

How do I best present these? I've spoken with a few college admissions reps, and when I start talking about it, they assume that all I did was knock on doors and make phone calls and aren't all that interested/impressed. It takes a while for me to get across the point that I really worked hard on these campaigns and I was wondering if you had any advice for how to present this in my application?

…

1) You get letters of recommendation from some of the people on whose campaigns you’ve worked and made a substantial contribution;

2) You write an essay about what you’ve done and why it’s important to you;

3) On your EC section, you make sure that you’ve accurately presented the aggregate number of hours you put into this kind of work.
