How to put "All State Honors Musician" on application/resume?

Hi all, I know this is a really specific question, but I wasn’t sure where else to ask it. This question is directed towards students/parents who were involved in music competitions like district and all-state.

For the past 2 years, I’ve participated in Illinois’ ILMEA (Illinois Music Educator’s Association) competition, where students audition for the chance to participate in music groups. Last year, I auditioned and made the district level. This year, I auditioned and made 2nd chair in district, and was able to move on to all state. At all state, I auditioned and made their all-state honors band)

Musicians know that this is a pretty significant accomplishment (sorry if I come off as bragging, I’m not trying to) as it is extremely selective. If I had to guess, I would say that making all-state honors has an acceptance rate of maybe 5% (16 spots, hundreds of applicants).

I’m eager to put this on my college application and resume to show colleges that I’m a dedicated musician, but I’m not sure how to list it. I could list it as “Honors band participant, All State Conference, ILMEA competition”, but I’m not sure if this carries the weight it should to college admissions. I want to show colleges that this is a selective and significant accomplishment that means something, but I’m not sure listing it as that would get that across. Do you guys have any advice on how I could list this in my application and resume? Thanks in advance for any advice! :slight_smile:

Don’t be modest! I would put on the resume “Honors band participant, All State Conference, ILMEA competition - The all-state honors band is highly competitive ensemble offered to sixteen students out of hundreds of applicants.” Something like that! Put it towards the top of your resumé if it is something you recently participated in and is one of the more impressive things you’ve done/you want it to be noticed. My brother and I have both participated in competitive orchestras like this and that’s what we write on our resumés. My brother went through the college process five years ago, and I am currently going through it, so I am very familiar with this type of thing. Congrats on honors band, it sounds like an amazing accomplishment!

@collegedbenice thanks so much!
