My gf, is going to be valedictorian of her graduating class this year and she has received a bunch of scholarships. It's actually to the point where the amount she is getting is above the coa of attendance. I understand that the more that she gets in scholarships will result in lower grants? Can she do anything? She needs a laptop and that sort of stuff, shouldn't that be able to be thrown in with coa? And please no comments about how she should be happy with what she's getting because she is incredibly thankful. She wants the money to save for her sophomore year because there will be loans then because of her parents both receiving promotions this year...Thanks.

well she’ll get all of the left over money, so this is good.

^I doubt she will. Schools usually deduct the amount of outside scholarships when thye give grants. I don’t know if A&M does it, but I’ll assume they do. Correct me if I’m wrong though. Why is she getting so much money just freshman year? Did she go after a ton of scholarships that are only one year deals? Can she ask A&M to defer the grants until next year?

A pell grant, a century scholarship from tamu, valedictorian exemption, top 10% scholarship, a tamu grant, and some local scholarships for like 2,400 is what she got. Only the pell grant and the century scholarship should be there next year. Which is why she would like to have some advice. How do you defer grants, I’ve never heard of that?

I haven’t either. I’m just saying you could ask. They’d probably say no, but it’s worth a try.

bump…

All you can really do is call & ask. You might get responses here but not many people are stuck in that situation. Has she already applied for financial aid & seen what she’s been offered? Because on my financial aid portal it shows what i’ve been given & then i have the option to report outside scholarships.
So actually, i think they might decide your financial aid before they even know about outside scholarships.
But hey, i really don’t know.

She called today and evidentally she can send an appeal for specific items she thinks should be included in her coa. We’ll see.

That’s good but i don’t know how much that will help ![]()
Because part of cost of attendance is the miscellaneous stuff which is like $2000 dollars so laptops & stuff might be included in that
But Good luck, i wish the best for her :)
