How to receive financial aid?

Applying to UChicago,Yale, Northwestern, Northeastern, University of Michigan and USC. What should i do to receive financial aid as an international student? Is it possible to receive financial aid for the first year too? Please help me ASAP.

For each of these schools, you should be able to go to their financial aid webpage to see the requirements needed to apply for financial aid (you will probably need to fill out the CSS Profile and submit to each one, and they may have other forms too.

Here’s an example of what to look for ([this is Yale’s financial aid page](<a href=“Welcome | Student Financial and Administrative Services”>Welcome | Student Financial and Administrative Services)).

You can get financial aid the first year, if it is provided. However, as a state university I suspect that the University of Michigan may not provide too much aid for international students.

University of Michigan- offers very very limited need based aid to international students.

Northwestern University- offers need based aid to only a small number of international students. Will not cover international travel at all. Need aware for international students.

Northeastern University- offers no need based aid to international students

USC- offers no need based aid to international students.

University of Chicago- need aware for international students. But if you plan to apply for aid, you must do so at the time you apply for admissions.

Yale- offers need based aid to international students and is need blind for admissions. Your application will be reviewed in the international pool of applicants (which is typically a very strong one with very low % off accepted students).

In my opinion, if this comprises you entire college application list, and you require need based aid to attend. You have picked a poor list of schools. Two don’t give need based aid at all. Two give limited need based aid. Five are need aware for admissions (meaning your ability to pay will be considered when your application for admissions is considered). Chicago meets international need but is need aware, Yale is both need blind and meets full need.

If you NEED need based aid, two schools won’t provide it at all (NEU and USC), and Michigan and NW offer very limited need based aid to international students.

None of the schools on your list are a slam dunk for you.

if you are lucky enough to get accepted to Yale or Chicago, you need to apply for aid as an incoming freshman, and yes, if eligible, you could receive it.

If you are lucky enough to get accepted to Michigan or NU and are lucky enough to be in that very limited number of students who get need based aid, yes, you could get it freshman year. But it is limited funding for international students…your full need might not get met.

Northeastern and USC…if you need aid to attend, don’t apply there. They don’t give aid to international students…unless I’m reading their websites incorrectly.

Northeastern gives merit aid to internationals.

@Niroshan What are your stats?

@madison85
SAT II Maths L2 680 (I know this isn’t that great)
Physics 760
TOEFL 112
SAT is on January

Graphing Designing, Video Editing, 3D animation, Server side programming, Documentary directing and offset print layout are my Actives

What i need to get merit based aid at Northeastern?

In general, you would need to be among the top applicants from your country.

yes, Northeastern gives merit aid…to top 1% of admitted students. This is not a slam dunk for anyone.

And this student hasn’t yet even taken the SAT. Gotta ask…why the delay in taking the SAT?

ETA…this student may have missed the application deadline for Northeastern Merit aid consideration…since he has not yet taken the SAT. How is this student going to complete the application to NEU without the SAT scores?

@thumper1 @TomSrOfBoston
I think dropping Northeastern from the list is good choice. Isn’t it?

Well…ISC doesn’t offer aid to international students either.

@thumper1
Reason i dropped NE is SAT deadline, not financial aid (Still I don’t have much wealthy background). But i’ve to try my best to receive it.

Do very many schools accept a Jan SAT for consideration senior year?

Why have you waited SO LONG to take the SAT??? You have no idea if you’ll even have top-school worthy stats! You could waste a bunch of time and money submitting apps for the Jan 1 deadline, then take the SAT and get a 2000ish score which wouldn’t be high enough for these schools.

If you don’t need FA, why are you applying for FA since many schools are need-aware?

How much can your family afford to pay each year for four years?

@mom2collegekids
The universities i’m applying accept January SAT scores. You’re correct. I’m not quite sure about my stats.
The reason i apply FA is, if i don’t get it i’'ll have to sell a family asset for my studies. I need to get admitted to atleast one of these universities. With what SAT score can i be a competitive candidate for these colleges?

Around $30,000 a year. I know some universities cost way more than that.

@Niroshan, in your case I really do recommend applying to some universities that you can pay for without aid just in case. As thumper mentioned in the earlier post, most of the universities you have chosen give little aid and/or are need-aware for international students, so you want to have a backup plan in case this doesn’t work the way you want. Hopefully you will do well on the SATs when you take them but even if you do it is still a matter of luck for anyone when applying to Yale – there’s no guarantee. If you can find a school that costs about $30,000 (including travel and living expenses, not just tuition) that would be very smart just to ensure that in the fall you know there is at least one place where you can go to school. Don’t give up hope on other schools but just have a backup plan.

Good luck!
