When I asked how my letter of recommendation was coming, one of my teachers told me that she had a hard copy of the letter and just needed to type it up. Finally, on the day I needed it, I asked her again if she had finished it. She told me she would type it during her free period and asked me to come by after school. After school, she told me that she hadn't had a chance to type it. I felt bad about hounding her, so I just said, "Well, do you want me to type it for you?" She said, "Oh yes! That would be wonderful!" It was rather disconcerting to transcribe superlatives about myself, but I typed it and she signed and sealed it. (There was no confidentiality requirement.)

In conclusion, sometimes the only way to get a letter is to type it yourself.
