How to request additional financial aid

So I've got a few offers. But that just doesn't make up for enough. How do I request additional aid? Should I mention the colleges which have provided me more(but I would like to come to your college cause it's one of my top choices). How do you write such letters? What all is relevant to mention?

If the schools that have given you better packages are of lesser rank, then the high ranked schools may not think that’s relevant.

What schools gave you better aid? Which ones gave you worse aid? What are your stats?

mom2collegekids:

Actually, it’s not about the rank here. I just wanted to attend College of Wooster/Ohio Wesleyan University over University of Texas, Dallas(Academic Scholarship) because I’d like to go to an LAC.

Important to mention: I am an international outside the US.

Stats:

SAT I: 2010( 610CR, 690M, 710W)
SAT II: 2120(700MATH II, 730BIO, 690 PHYSICS)

GPA: not calculated in country, instead percentage which is 86-93%

Rank 6: (top 10%)

ECS(not very strong): School Magazine for 2 years, Volunteered at a non-governmental organisation, Debator, Emcee, worked in school to teach underpriviledged. Club member: english literary society in school, won some essay competitions(including Commended in Commonwealth essay competition).

Hope this helps! :)

“I am an international outside the US.”

This probably is the biggest factor working against you as far as financial aid is concerned. Some institutions have very little money for international students.

Since you have received a more advantageous offer from one university, let the place(s) you’d rather attend know about that. But, don’t be surprised if they don’t come up with more aid for you. And, please check with UT Dallas about that scholarship. What do you have to do in order keep receiving it for all four years?

^^^^ Good points…

I think you misunderstood. I’m not saying that you care about rank. I’m saying that a higher ranking school (such as CoW or OHU) aren’t likely going to increase their aid just because a lower ranking school gave you more.

Lower ranking schools will often give bigger scholarships for certain stats because they have less students with those stats, which makes the student more desirable.

^^ yup, that totally makes sense. To exaggerate this example, Harvard ain’t gonna bat an eyelid if you ask them for more, telling them XYZ college is giving you a full-ride.

I’m gonna tailgate on this thread as I am also an international student in a similar predicament. In my story, all the schools involved are reputable but little-known LACs. I would say they are about the same ‘rank’.

I am also needing more money (than the scholarship already awarded) from my favourite schools. It seems rude to wave it in their faces and say, “Look here, other schools are giving me more scholarship! So can you give me more?!” Do people really do this and succeed?

My second question regards what is clearly stated on their website. If their website says, for eg, “Maximum of 10k scholarship for internationals”, can I really push it and ask for more, like on a case-by-case basis? I think I already have the maximum amount this fave school can give, based on website’s info. I feel like my fave school really wants me, based on letters to my parents above the constant mailers, post-acceptance. I love the school too!

(geez bereavedvendetta, don’t you just wish we could combine our institutional scholarship monies to attend just our favorite school? I fantasize about that!)

If stats are high for the school and/or the student is from a desirable area, then sometimes an FA/Scholarship office will give more money if the student asks politely appeals for some additional consideration. The approach can sometimes makes the difference. :)

That may be a problem since they may only have $10k of institutional funds budgeted for int’ls since any additional aid is federal or state.

happymomof1:

the requirements listed are:

I am expected to earn a per semester GPA of 3.0 or better for the first two semesters and a per semester GPA of 3.25 thereafter.

I am expected to complete a minimum of 15 UTD credit hours per semester (full-time status) in a UTD degree program (30 hours within the academic year).

I am expected to complete 75% of the classes I register for each semester.

I have to admit, Ohio Wesleyan has a great commitment to international students. The international dean mailed me yesterday, promising an additional award for financial aid. Just keeping my fingers crossed now! And this did come without asking.

mom2college kids: I agree, it does make sense. So, I guess I have to be careful before letting out names.

mamaroneck: Truly wished that was possible.

About asking for more money: Initially, I thought the same. A lot of my seniors have done that and have been successful in claiming more money(but again as mom2collegekids says, they were very meritorious).
