That should also roughly be a 10 or 11 on the ACT; although the two have different writing strategies, a grade on the SAT could translate over to the ACT (unless you have some really strong preference for one or the other, get lucky, or get unlucky).

I heard on the ACTs, to just write ALOT…

hmmm…interesting…lol.???

Got my essay score back…i got an 11, so I guess my theory to writing alot worked out/

I scored a 9 on my sat essay (thought i deserved a 10), and then i thought i wrote an even BETTER essay on my act and i got an 8 ~. ~ . I really don’t know the specifics for the act essay can anyone help?

bump.

My writing score is just horrible (7…)

I thought I’d read every trick in the book, but I just can’t seem to do well. Is writing a lot in a coherent manner really all it takes? Should I include an entirely separate body paragraph just to refute counterarguments?

I got a 9 on my essay. I probably would have gotten a 2 had it been the ACT. They’re a lot different style wise. I did what I read on here and provided logic to support my thesis and refuted the counter argument. One of my paragraphs was about how I’m a good student yet I can’t multitask, not some literary example

I pulled a 12 on both the SAT and the ACT essays. My strategy was just to write as much as I could, and make sure it was well supported, like the reader could see how it directly related to the prompt at hand. Oh and make up BS quotes. Without knowing if he said it or agreed with my point of view, I “quoted” a Nobel Prize winner in chemistry on some topic about school (fyi: prompt June 09 ACT)

now i realize that i didn’t even refute the counter arguement :X
is it even possible to get a 5 or 6 without doing that ?

yes i didn’t refute it and still got an 11 which was shocking.

I got a 10 on my essay and this is what I thought helped me the most.

Defintely fluency through the ideas. You want to use a million transitions to help the reader read the paper. The person has to read hundreds of these and if the person can’t follow what you are saying, “tsk tsk” and you will be marked down. Use “although” and “therefore” as much as possible, it helps the reader.

Also, have conflicting viewpoints. So, I think my way about (the topic) is the best approach but the other person may say that their way is the best way because of (reason). It is not true, however, because (reason). and that way you can build upon conflicting viewpoints and show that you have addressed the other side, but your idea is still the “better one”.

Also, have a STRONG thesis. That usually makes the paper. If the thesis does not hold, then the paper is crap basically. Explain thoroughly the reader that “this is my viewpoint, I’m going to prove it this manner with points A, then B, and finally C”

I hope that helped! I’m still aiming for that perfect 12! :D
