How to secure your expensive stuff

Does anyone have any ideas of how to lock up my stuff in my dorm room?
I was in a dorm that had a locking dresser but I got moved to a dorm that doesn't have a dresser at all.

I'm not really interested in safes, they seem like they're easy to move and I have larger items that would need to fit in the safe (an SLR camera, my laptop, iPod, expensive purses etc.).

I was thinking of getting a dresser that locks just like the one the other dorm offered, but I can't find any online for less than $300!

And I'm fine ordering online if that's all you can find; I've googled it already but even stores like Meijer and Target are charging a ton!

My first piece of advice would be to bring valuables to the dorm that you don’t mind using. That would perhaps mean purchasing a $100 camera to take casual pictures rather than trying to make sure the DSLR camera you have does not get stolen.

Therefore, if you’re really concerned, I would consider investing in a laptop lock. You might as well be comfortable trying to hide the valuables in the dresser even if it doesn’t lock.

A “cheaper” way to make a locking cabinet would be to purchase a two-door cabinet, then securing the doors with a padlock. Something with handles that makes it possible to lock, not something with knobs though. I do understand that it might not be as safe an option than dedicated locking cabinets, but will suffice fine.

Landmines.

Are you living in a high-crime area or something? If not, lock your door whenever you’re not in the room and make sure your roommate does the same, and you’re set. No need to shell out a ton of money for a safe.

You’re more likely to have your stuff stolen outside of your dorm than in your room. If dorm break-ins occur at all, they usually happen during break periods, so just make sure to bring your iPod/camera/laptop home with you.

And seriously, what greensam said. If you’re planning to bring something so valuable that you aren’t comfortable leaving it in a locked room, you should probably leave it at home. It’s not worth stressing over.
