How to self-study for Art History?

I would really like to self-study Art History, but I don't know very much about Art...

If anyone out there has a good idea of what to do, please share some tips.

I'd like to know what review books to read, if any websites have good materials, if self-studying it is "doable", etc..

If you haven’t started yet, you really should. I am taking the class this year and it has such a wide breadth of subject matter. You must get a textbook (we use Gardner’s Art Through the Ages) because there aren’t many study guides for it, and the ones that there are (like the Annotated Mona Lisa) are very shallow and don’t cover NEARLY as much as they should.

I suggest you go through each chapter of the textbook you get and take notes on all of the pieces. Try searching the internet for a class website and try to follow that curriculum but just sped up.

Good luck! It’s not gonna be easy!

MIT has open source courseware in art history. I knew a student who used that and scored a 5. My daughter mostly just studied The Annotated Mona Lisa and practiced identifying works on Free Rice. She scored a 4.

If you are going to take AP Art History you will need review book(s). REA is the best for detailed descriptions of the art. Barron’s covers every possible piece and is best for reviewing right before the exam.

This website is amazing! It includes most of the information you need to know, but a review book is also needed:[Smarthistory: a multimedia web-book about art and art history](http://smarthistory.khanacademy.org/)

yeah im taking art history right now and if I were you I would start studying NOW because there is A LOT to know! But if you are extremely diligent and good with memorizing facts then it can be done.

I highly recommend getting Barrons for AP Review, The Annotated Mona Lisa. and try to get a textbook too if possible (you can get it at your school if they offer AP Art History or invest in one yourself but it shouldnt be too costly)

But if you cant get a textbook, then get all the previously mentioned and REA w/CD and do a lot of practice questions from the College Board.

I’ve taken AP Art History at my HS and taken it in college.
I found the best way to study is get index cards. Put the photo on one side and info on the back. The main info is:
Name of artwork, artist, year and which period in history, what medium used, little information about the artwork…,such as historical importance and such.
Studying that way had helped me immensely on the exams that were all essay based.

Also someone mentioned Gardener’s. Yes use that textbook every Art History professor use Gardener’s.
