Hey! how do i send in an additional letter of rec, one that I’m getting from a mentor who isnt a teacher or one of my counselors? I checked commonapp and it didnt seem to have any way for me to add an additional letter.

suggestions?

thank you!

You should only have an additional letter to the ones asked for in the common app if it is from a mentor / research adviser etc if it
- does not fulfill one of the standard criteria (as you mention, not one of your teachers, someone outside of your school, etc) Otherwise you should figure / with your guidance counselor if it fits as one of your standard letters of recommendation.
- If that person can speak to your academic or other pertinent traits that a college admissions officer will think are different or above what they can ascertain from the rest of your application. For instance a rec from your boyscout troop leader, minister etc is not necessarily going to help, (unless they are going to be telling how you had the leadership skills to personally do XYZ that no kid your age has done in their lifetime, lol) However for things like letters from college level instructors, or research MDs (esp for PLME applicants) I think those letters can be a real help to show you have the smarts/ skills to handle Brown’s rigor, if they are well written.
SO: most students should not have extra letters (and admissions people really don’t want to get lots of them!!) (and if you have one, ONLY one!)
Ask your HS college guidance person if you can bring in the letter or have it sent to them, for them to include through the Common App/Naviance method they are sending your HS recs. If not, then send it directly to the admissions office, (as you would a performing art piece) and make sure it is clearly marked with your name, address, school, and any Common ap identifying numbers etc if they use those now. At least this was the protocol a few years ago.
