I want my college application theme to be a combination of my academic interest in economics and my personal interest in being able to express myself and my views through video production (Documentary making for a program and I might also start a youtube channel where I post Vlogs, makeup, outfits, etc.), photography, and writing (I’m in my school’s newspaper club). I am not sure how to express my interest in economic though. Also, from what I am doing for my personal interests, does it reveal my interest or no? I want to be able to show a strong spike in that area of interest. Thank you all for reading.
Ngl having a vlogging channel probably won’t help you in college admissions. If you want to show interest in economics, write an article in your school newspaper and send that in as a supplement or join an economics-based club. You should also take an econ class in school (AP if it’s offered). I’m guessing you’re a junior based off your username, so you don’t have much time left. Anything started now will probably look like a last-ditch effort to the adcom.
Confused by this question. Does it mean that you’re asking that what you described will show interest in econ? Because no.
Oh, I meant my interest in sharing and expressing myself. Would starting some sort of business like selling things etc. help with my interest in econ though? Also, for my school’s newspaper, I’m part of the group that writes about Arts and Entertainment.
I’m taking ap macro/micro in senior year
I think that everyone has some level of interest in expressing themselves, but what you’re describing sounds more like being an extrovert. I’d try and make that come across as much as possible. If your recommenders have you fill out a personal info form to request recommendations (mine did and many others do) ask that they speak to your outgoing nature and your willing to be a leader (good qualities that colleges look for). You could also structure your essay around this and how it’s helped you. So far, your ECs are pretty standard, so they don’t really show it, but there are many opportunities in the actual application to make it stand out.
I’m more of an introvert lol. I’m trying to piece my application into one theme with all my interests but not sure if I am doing it right since it looks like random activities.
Ngl trying to make your application have a theme is sort of pointless. The theme of your application is you. Everyone will have a different hs experience, so no application will be the same as another. I think as long as you try and express yourself as genuinely as possible you should have no problem showing your passions/interests to an adcom.
Alright, thank you! I’ll probably try to build a better theme off from that. Should my theme reflect both my academic and personal interests?
Don’t have a theme, period. Just fill out the application and write your essays as genuinely as you can. Again, the “theme” is you. You can’t exactly stylize something that’s super fact-oriented (with the exception of the essay). You’ll mostly just be inputting facts about your academic career. The only real area to make it personalized (as in not fact-based) is the essay. So your application can’t really have a theme, but your essay(s) can.
I was considering would one be placed at a disadvantage if they have a particular interest that isn’t related to the major they are applying to.
That’s not necessarily true. Most colleges like to see that students are well-rounded and can handle coursework in all fields. Obviously they want to see a passion for the student’s intended major, but a well-rounded student is more appealing than one who only concentrates in one subject area.
