How to simplify the move?

Can you provide tips for students who do not live within driving distance of NYU? We are curious to know: 1) other than Bed Bath & Beyond, can you recommend less expensive stores/resale shops nearby? 2) what do students typically do with bed toppings and other bulky items at the end of the year? 3) are there storage facilities nearby to keep items over the summer? Thanks for your help.

There is a Kmart very close by at Astor Place.

I moved from the west coast and I personally used Bed, Bath & Beyond’s Pack and Hold option (where you buy it at your home store and pick it up in New York). It wasn’t the cheapest but it eliminated the stress of buying everything over there! There are some Goodwills but they’re mostly clothes. A Target also just opened in Manhattan so you don’t have to go to Jersey or Brooklyn anymore which is great.

At the end of the year people, I managed to vacuum seal my bedding and put it in storage, but there are also giant Goodwill donation bins in all the residence halls that people put stuff into (including comforters and mattress toppers). There’s a ton of storage everywhere, I have my stuff stored in Brooklyn but there are a few storage facilities in Manhattan that are fine. Nowhere walkable really, but 18 year olds can rent Uhauls in New York and there’s a Uhaul place within walking distance from campus. It’s not that expensive. I’m also sharing a smallish locker with 2 of my friends also from the west coast so I’m only paying about $13 a month because we didn’t actually have that much stuff! Honestly it was a lot less stressful than I thought it would be.

Also the Kmart is great and I go all the time!

Does the dorm provide a vacuum so that students may use it to clean up the floor?

It depends on the dorm. Each one has a resource center but what they have seems to differ a little bit. You can always get a broom, though. We got one of the little vacuums just for our room so it was never an issue.
