how to solve the "distance" problem

You know the ones where it is like

" someone traveled to work at 45 mph, and traveled back home on the same route at 30 mph. The total travel time was 1hr. How many miles did the person travel in total?"

thanks

(total distance)/(total time)

d = rt

distance = rate * time

don't use either of the formulas mentioned above... instead use this:

Avg.speed for entire trip = 2 (speed1 * speed2) / (speed1 + speed2)

then total distance = total time * avg speed

so...

2 * 45 * 30 / (45+30) = 36 mph

then 1 * 36 = total distance = 36.

that is exactly the same formula I had!!!!!!

avg speed = rate

v1=d1/t1 so t1=(d1/v1)
v2=d2/t2 so t2=(d2/v2)

total time= t1+t2
so

1hr=(d2/v2)+(d1/v1) and d1=d2 work out the rest
that way you won't have to go about memorizing formulas besides your obvious velocity one
