How to stand out??

Hi,
I commonly see people telling others that they need to stand out for admissions to top colleges, but how? I'm a Junior and I love science but I don't know how I can stand out. Anything I can do at this point to hell me stand out? I have the grades and test scores to get in, but without a unique thing, I'll just be a typical applicant.

Have your rich parents donate a building?

I’m extremely poor. Haha.

Did you overcome some extremely personal challenge?

Go get this book from the library and read it, and think about what you can do this next semester and over the summer. It is called “How to be a High School Superstar: A Revolutionary Plan to Get Into College By Standing Out (Without Burning Out)” by Cal Newport.

I’ve worked a job three years. Does that count? Haha.

Thank you intparent. I will check out that book for sure.

^Sadly that does not count…

I bought the ebook and am currently reading through it. I found great information. Def. need to check it out ShawnG122!

Will take a look at the book. Thanks guys!

Any other tips?bump

You stand out by doing what you love with all your heart. You like science? Do something with it: intern, volunteer, docent, tutor, TA…use your skills to do something worthwhile (and I don’t mean joining a club!) and show some creativity and initiative by taking it beyond what is merely ‘expected’ of you in that capacity.

And Cal Newport is great! He’s the original ‘quality not quantity’ EC guru.

Well I have research down for sure over the summer most likely. I do volunteer at a hospital and will shadow a doctor soon. I’ve tutored in math and science and have around 150 hours. I’m trying to think of creative ECs that are feasible for me to do. There are still limits to what a high school student can do. Any specific suggestions on what I can do that can catch an adcoms admiration?
