Hi, this upcoming school year I am going to be a sophomore in high school. I constantly hear people tell me that I need to stand out when it's time to apply to college, but how can I do this? I've seen through my sister and her friends that grades are not enough, so what can I do that will spark interest in my application?

Simple: get involved. Whether that means extracurriculars, community service, or training a dancing monkey–anything to show that you care more about the letters on your report card.

Whatever you choose to do, stick to it. Depth >> Breadth

Read Cal Newport’s book “How to Be a High School Superstar: A Revolutionary Plan to Get Into College By Standing Out (Without Burning Out)”. It answers your exact question. Tells you how to zig when everybody else is zagging. Do it now so you have this whole summer to start taking advantage of his advice.

Pick something, anything that you like. Focus on it. Whether it’s blogging, playing the guitar, playing a sport, doing community service… so long as you are productive and dedicated, you’re good. Then, after you pick something, expand it. Play your guitar at a concert to raise money for cancer patients, run for charity, advertise your blog somewhere.

Also, inexpensive summer programs are always good. If you can’t find anything that matches your interests, then at least do something so that your summer won’t go to waste (read above).
