how to start a club?

I’m a sophomore in high school and am interested in starting a club at my school. However, my school administration is very slow when allowing students to start a club.

My club is pretty simple. I plan for it to meet for an hour once a week. All I need is a teacher to can help instruct club participants, a room to stay in, and computers (my school has 3 computer labs, so this should be pretty easy; also, students have their own computers given to them by the school). I do not need any money for materials because all the material used is free, and there won’t be any trips.

I really want to convey to my school administration that people in school would really want to join and that this club is important and should be implemented as soon as possible, given its positive impact on students and its simpleness.

I would like to make the best impression possible. Should I email them, introducing my idea, and then later set up a meeting with them to discuss it further if they are interested?

I’m really passionate about starting a club because it is a topic that is important to me. I am not doing this for college; I am doing this because I truly want to impact my school and my community in a positive way.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Have a written out plan that shows what you are going to do, how you are going to do it. Show that it is a well thought out idea, not some crackpot plan to pad your college application. Sell it to a teacher(advisor) first. Make sure that you are not making more work for the advisor. You should be doing the work. It is hard and a lot of work.

@Eeyore123 Thanks for your advice. Are you suggesting that I send them my entire plan and then schedule the meeting? I agree that I should be giving them as little work as possible, but it is required to have an advisor/teacher for the club who is over the age of 18, so I do not qualify to be one. However, I will do anything and everything that does not require an advisor/teacher to do. I’m really passionate about this so I will try my best to be as completely involved as possible.

  1. Do you have some people who would join your club? Like at least 5-10 people who would come? You can then advertise to the rest of the student body.
  2. Do you have a teacher that would be an adviser? Try to talk to some.
  3. Try to find out if there are any newish clubs and see how they did it.
  4. Have some ideas of what you would do in the first few club meetings planned.
  5. Ask someone how clubs are started at your school...Guidance Counselor would be a good place to start.
