How to start studying for the LSAT?

I am graduating next year in December and need to start studying for the Oct LSAT (I plan on taking time off between Dec and August). I have a 3.93 GPA and am looking at either ASU or Stanford (big price difference since I'm an Arizona resident at ASU). I'm 25, non-traditional student.

ANYWAY, I am completely overwhelmed and unsure how to start studying for the LSAT. Do I buy old LSAT tests and practice a few, learn where I have the most trouble, and then buy speciality books?

I am not opposed to a course (TestMasters or Powerscore) but want to make sure I get the most for my money. I am thinking about studying on my own for a few months and then going with a 20 hour private tutor. I'd rather spend money on a private tutor than a course so any ideas on how to help me on my own and then with a tutor is great.

Please help. Any advice on where/how to start is really appreciated.
