How to stay alert on boring passages

<p>You know the passages like civil-rights, womens right movement, african-american passages, how the ***** do you stay alert and awake.</p>

<p>I try to be interested, but still the sentence structure is so freakin convoluted. Do you have any tips to deciphering these passages? </p>
