I have a good friend who many people call arrogant. He realizes how many people call him such, and asked me

(1) why people call each other arrogant, in general
(2) how to not be arrogant.

I'd like to give him a proper response.

Considering how stellar all your stats are, I'm probably asking this in the wrong place, but since you guys seem like a very helpful and generous group of people, you might be able to help us. :D

Kelly: Wow James! You're real smart; you'll get a high score on the SATs!
James: Yeah I know, I'm just that great!

Wrong!!!!^^ Arrogance!!

Same Scenario Dialogue

Kelly: Wow James! You're real smart; you'll get a high score on the SATs!
James: Yeah, hopefully if I study hard enough and by the grace of God.

Ding Ding Ding!....Looks like James have found himself a nice slice of "Humble" Pie!

see, If James can at least not respond or say comments that amps his status, then he can at least be perceived as modest, rather than arrogant.

maybe if he just stops talking peple wont think hes arrogant
seriously a lot of arrogant people just keep having to be the center of attention and wont shut up

^ Silly. He should talk incessantly about how he's wrongly perceived as being arrogant when, in reality, he posseses a supreme level of intelligence that is incomprehensible to average people.

okay. I have a little problem myself. I always try to be modest when it comes to academics, but it always blows up in my face!! I ALWAYS come off as an arrogant prick when I actually intended on being humble! I have no idea why that happens. My close friends know me as I actually am, but it's my other classmates who think of me that way.

Arrogant is an extreme character trait. He needs to try and just act the complete opposite of who he is. It might come off weird, but I've noticed that people who come off arrogant really are just people who need to unclinch and not always be in control all the time.

I’ve been called condescending, which I guess goes hand in hand with arrogance. I just try to change the tone of my voice to fix that though. And I am arrogant too, but I’m much happier being that than modest (modesty is like passive-aggressive arrogance)

Just be simple. I mean, really… You get 2400, people ask you - how much did you get - you say 2400, and smile. If you notice some change in facials, tell them - I do not mean to sound arrogant, and smile again. Be simple as much as possible

stupid people call smart people arrogant; untalented people call talented people arrogant.

it’s jealousy. people envy you.

just ignore the people; once you get into a good college you will have to deal with it much less because almost everyone will be on your level.

when i was quiet, people called me arrogant, when i wasn’t, they called me arrogant. they didn’t even know me or have a conversation with me. bunch of fckers, basically. so i ignored them. it worked out.
