Is it possible to self study for APs and just sign up for the test and take it? I have been debating against my school for months now but they keep telling me that there's no space and it's all been given to seniors! I don't want to sacrifice my junior year simply because of their pathetic excuses! I know they can easily take me in but that would require them to change my entire schedule which will take time and they're too lazy to do it. Anyways, is it possible?

Depends which ones, certain APs are known to be self-studyable. I have self-studied Macro and Micro and found them relatively straightforward and not very burdensome in terms of time commitment. A few others commonly self-studied include AP Envrionmental Science, AP Psychology, and AP Human Geography. However, a science or math AP would prove most challenging, while history would be most time-consuming to self study.

Thanks a lot for the fast response! AP Macro and Micro count as 1 AP course? Anyways I’ll give it a go along with AP psychology, hopefully it won’t be too bad! What books did you use for your self studying?

I had a similar question. If you I self studied an AP and didn’t get the score I wanted, will colleges know? Also, should I just sign up to take the test? If so, how do I sign up?

@Foodlover001, from my memory you are not required to disclose your exam scores (unless you want to) to most colleges (such as failed APs, prior SAT’s…) Depends on the college to be honest.

You don’t have to tell the colleges about the AP scores.
Okay, I’ve decided I’m gonna self study for AP psychology and AP chemistry! Maybe AP bio too if I can handle it, but I highly doubt that. Going to purchase several books over the course of the year, hoping for the best!

Thanks. When do I pay for the exams?

@FoodLover001, I think you’d be best off checking with your schools guidance counselor / AP Central on the CollegeBoard site.
