Yeah so what are some good techniques to study for the PSAT? Like books, a class so yeah? Also can you improve your score by like 50+ points? Is that possible? Like I got a 174 on my sophmore PSAT. I want like 210+.

Um...well, I improved my score by 39 points by studying with the KAPLAN SAT CD. It helped me a lot, but all I can really say to you, is read lengthy passages and train your comprehension ability for the critical reading section. For the math section, if you're a musician...practice your instrument really hard and pay attention to the rhythm. It'll get you in the "number mood".

Study as you would with SATs. So do practice tests from Kaplan, Princeton, SAT Blue Book. Then, afterwards, I'd suggest you just study vocab like it's your life?

yeah, I'd definitely recommend studying like it's the SAT, and that way you'll be preparing yourself for both at the same time.

There are some good books out there that are specifically for the PSAT, but I don't know, I think a 50 point increase is a little unrealistic... Better than any prep book for writing section improvements is just to read real books (novels, non-fiction, classics especially) a LOT. If you're used to reading good writing, you'll be better at recognizing it. There are SAT math drill workbooks too, if you want to do the intensive thing. Good luck.

Ahh... I want to improve my PSAT score, too. I want 12 more points >_<

yeah i would read the PR SAT book, and then do all of the Blue Book practice tests...study as you would the SAT.

How I studied for PSAT?

Math: Challenging math courses, mathletes, confidence
Reading: Luck, practice tests, grammatix
Writing: Nothing much. What sounds right probably is right.

Didn't use the blue book - was saving it for the SAT.

Result: 221

Nice job. . . .

hey im in a situation right now where I have to improve my writing score to a 78 atleast or I wont make cut-off. How do I do that? My score was 69 soph.year. Can someone tell me what he or she did to improve his/her writing score 9 or so points?

I got a 170 sophomore year so two weeks before the exam my junior year I went through the Princeton Review's PSAT book and got a 212. Good Luck!

I had a 78 writing with very little studying. I mostly just went with what sounded right.

What does it take to raise your score 80 points by October? I would have 4 months until the test. Hoping to raise from 156 to 236, what do you think would be the best preparation? :D

I was thinking to basically get down to the core of each section. For math, I would relearn most of my Alg 1 stuff, for writing, I would relearn the necessary grammar basics, and for critical reading I would learn more about critical reading and learn vocabulary roots and such. Then I would go to supplementary sources to prepare for the test itself, like for math, I would do math problems similar to the SAT's, for writing, I would practice grammar type questions, and for critical reading I would read more articles (perferably news) and learn new vocab words.

Then finally during the last month probably, I will take practice tests only.

I started reading like my life depended on it.
Did some SAT practice tests, but not too many. Maybe 3-4...

171 >>> 209

Sophomore year: 194ish

Summer after soph year: SAT study. took a TON of prac SAT tests... something like one test a week or so. math: triple check the problems, don't make stupid mistakes. verbal: MEMORIZE vocab.. i did something like 300 words before my SAT and my verbal score went up 80 pts (8 pts on PSAT scale). i still missed THREE vocab questions. writing: learn your grammar. read about grammar or something... then it's really easy.

junior year: 236

raising your score is DEFINITELY possible. good luck!

Wow, nice x3rose! I wonder how you got a hgh score to begin with! :P

It seems that you didn't even study for the PSAT but instead the SAT, is that right?

yes, they are essentially the same thing, with the exception of an essay and one's like three hours longer. (i had a RIDICULOUS proctor who was very slow). i took the SAT the week before so it was kind of a warmup for the PSAT, which i thought was a LOT easier than the SAT. i had no idea i was going to do that well (my goal was 210+) since my SAT score was in the 2100s. i was in disbelief when i got my score.

study sats

What about the math part? I'm sure you would have to study directly from the PSATs for math, and possibly writing, no?

For critical reading, I agree, SAT's is probably better.

math is basically the same except a bit more difficult on SAT, but if you're prepared for SAT, you should be prepared for PSAT. writing is the same for MC, difference is just an essay. so you can still study from SAT and get a good score. i studied directly from SATs for everything. i got a few PSAT books for prac tests though.
