How to succeed in Community College?

Hello everyone,

I recently made the decision to go to a junior college for financial reasons.
Here are my high school stats.

Intended Major: Electrical Engineer
Sat Scores: 2070/2400
High School GPA: 4.3/3.9 uw
Class Rank: Top 5%

I did varsity track my junior and senior years. I did marching/symphonic band for four years. I will also soon be an eagle scout.

I want to go to De Anza and then transfer to Cal Poly or UC Berkley.
I wanted to know what I should do in community college to maximize my acceptance to one of these universities. Should I only focus on maintaining a heavy course load and getting good grades? Should I get involved with any extra curriculars? Also, does my high school career have a large impact on a transfer decision, or is it mostly based on my performance at a community college?

Thanks

You could proceed in one of two fashions. 1. Go to CC for a year and then decide to transfer. You high school stats rather exceptional so this would be an easy option for you. You would take the desired courses (as provided by the uni you want to transfer to) and apply end of fall/beginning of spring. 2. Go to CC for two years with hopes of attaining a AA/AS. Doing so you will have to take courses needed to for the degree by the CC. Once you do this your high school record will be almost useless and college material will be weighed heavily.

I assume you’re going to choose option 2 due to financial reasons in which case I suggest just get ready to destroy the CC so you have a great GPA and can be a likely candidate to transfer. Join clubs, do volunteer work, and make yourself look like a overall good applicant.

Be sure to check out the UC Transfer subforum here under Transfer Students, the CA publics are different from some other colleges in their transfer requirements and what they look for.
