How to survive waiting on a decision???

Hello All,

Recently I applied to the MSW program at Fordham for Spring '11 admission. How do you resist the urge to call everyday to find out if a decision has been reached? LOL but I am serious, the waiting is killing me.

I am also worried because on the application it asked how you prefer to be contacted usps or email including notification of decision- I selected email. When it asked for my address on the application I listed by current address which is in Maryland for active until Dec.1 and my parents' Long Island address as my permanent address for active as of December 1st. Despite this information they sent a letter to my parents' house 2 weeks ago! They said that they were missing one of my transcripts in the letter. They didn't send an email to inform me, nor did they send a letter to my Maryland address. My parents' were out of state and I only found out one week later when they returned.

I was very upset because I gathered my transcripts myself and sent them in the same priority mail envelope. It was impossible that they received one and not the other. Further I checked the Fordham page online everyday and they never updated it to say that they had even received the first one which they claimed in the postal letter to have received. When I called them to find out what was going on the woman pulled my name up on the computer and tried to give me an excuse about schools sending transcripts at different times. She said she enters them herself and that I should just be patient. When I told her that I sent them all together she put me on hold and said try back on Monday. Miraculously, 2 hours later the system showed the transcript they claimed to have never received! So now, the system is showing that all my application materials are in. Another friend of mine who also applied called yesterday to find out how applicants are notified of decision and was told that they never email decisions they are only mailed out. So why did they ask for an email address and ask if that was the method preferred for contact even for admission decisions? With all of this drama, I am worried that they will mail my decision to my parents' when I'm still in MD or to MD when I'm in NY. What should I do?

I'm just so annoyed by this whole process and ready for it to be over one way or the other- of course hoping desperately for admission.

Sorry this is so long. I truly appreciate any advice or suggestions that anyone can provide.

One deep breath always helps me.

Good luck with whatever news you hear!

They may send your decision to your parents’ house, and given that you won’t be at your current address after December 1, that’s better than sending to MD. You must alert your parents to call you as soon as anything from Fordham arrives. Still, it’s possible that they will send the decision via email, as you requested. You’re just going to have to sit tight and wait.

Since Fordham has your application status online, they may eventually post their decision there.

Seriously, take up a new hobby or finish that pile of books you’ve neglected or update your iPod music… literally ANYTHING will help make the time fly.

You do need to be very patient with graduate school admissions. If you know you sent in things together, it HAS to be there… somewhere in the office. It’s not like the mailman opened the package en route and dumped one of your transcripts.

Most importantly, try and have faith in the process. They will let you know, one way or another.

Also when they say “preferred contact method” it’s usually about administrative stuff, not decisions. So, yes, tell your parents that if they see any envelopes with a school name on it, have them call you immediately.

Thanks everyone! I truly appreciate you taking the time to help me out with your advice and suggestions.
