How to take AP if not offered at School?

I'm a current freshman, and next year our school only offers one AP for sophomore. I would like to try to study and take AP exam by myself. Our school only allow students to take Algebra 2 as a freshman, and only offers AP Calculus AB and BC. Can I study AP Statistics on my own and take the exam? I already talked to the counselor about it, and she said that we are not allowed to take any other AP exams except the one the school gives us. On the CollegeBoard, it says that we are able to study on our own and take the exam. If I can take the exam, how should I study for it? And how should I persuade my counselor to allow me to take the exam? Also, is there any other way to take the AP exam without counselor's permission? Thanks

If a school offers any AP classes, a student in that school can sign up for an AP test whether the school offers that subject or not. It is not something that needs to be negotiated with the GC.

@skieurope Thank you, but how would I sign up for the AP exam?

@gravitype Every school is different… In my school, guidance hands out a sign-up sheet with a list of every test that the school offers, and you can fill in any extra tests that you want to take.

If it comes down to it, just go to guidance and tell them that you’d like to register for a test that you self-studied (or will be self-studying) for.

You should be able to go through the college board. You can find a school that offers that exam and if they agree you can take the exam there.

I went through the college board to find schools in my area that offer the test that I wanted to take. They told me which ones (based on zip code) and their contact person but I had to get the contact person at my school to help set it up. When I talked to my contact person, who was the principal, he told me that they would just order a copy of it and they would get someone to proctor it for me.

Yes, just go to your guidance dept.
