old article but still somewhat helpful:

The 20-unit limit explained - The Stanford Daily Online

I think if it's 21 they'll allow it...btw is the sur class an EMT class?

21 is only allowed if one of the units is an activity unit. Like ballet or singing.

What's SUR? That one's new to me. o.O

oh sorry. it's just the undergaduate research one ( 199)

What are the two seminars? That could end up being tons of work...

I would just drop a seminar. I see very few reasons for doing 20 or over as a freshman anyway, IMHO, especially with the classes you're doing. PWR takes up a lot of time, and chem is hardly what you'd call an easy class (whether 31B or 33). I doubt research will count as an activity unit, so you might as well drop a seminar and then fill the rest with research units if you're so determined to do a full load. o,O

hey magerie...how were you able to get a position in a lab? I really want to start exploring research this quarter...even if it's like menial tasks in a lab

oh yeah. I just emailed people from the departments ahead of time and waited like forever for a reply.

Oh, also, with research, you could talk to your mentor and ask if you can just get credit in another quarter. The grad student I work with would be happy to do that (I started working right after the add deadline last quarter, so I'll just get credit for research this quarter).

^Yeah marlgirl is right most PIs wouldn't mind doing that (I know a few people who have done that). However remember that at the end of the day that you'd still be taking more than 20 units in terms of work.

How many hours a week are you working in the lab? That's something to consider. I worked 9 hours a week this quarter (I'm increasing it to 12 in winter) and trust me that does take a decent chunk of time away from you.
