How to take PSAT in sophomore year

My son is in freshman year and started some self study in English for PSAT and scored pretty decent ( 690)in his practice test for reading/writing section. He is taking Algebra 2 honors in his Freshman year- By the end of the freshman year, do you think he will have enough Algebra 2 under his belt to start attempting the math portion( he is ok at math, he tested at 98% in his HSPT entrance exams in 8th grade)?

The other question I had was his HS does not do PSAT until junior year. How can he do a real live PSAT test in sophomore- he thinks he will be ready, but if the school does not offer it, how can he register(I know that the NMSF rankings don’t count until the junior year, but the hope is he can use sophomore year as practice, to see where he needs help)

Thank you all

PSAT registration is done through schools, as opposed to public registration for most SATs.

I’d first ask the school to make an exception. You could then try contacting other schools and ask if they allow non-students to sign up, but I suspect this might be challenging.

Does the school offer the PSAT10 in the Spring instead. It would be pretty much just as valuable.

Since the PSAT isn’t offered for sophomores at your school, he can take the SAT next year for practice. He can take it again in junior and, if desired, senior year. Or he can just do practice tests at home until junior year.

Don’t do any official test as a practice. There are enough SAT practice tests floating around to give him more than enough practice. Have him take those tests in a timed setting.

Both of my boys took the SAT as practice Oct of their sophmore year. With Covid we were very glad S21 did. He took his second Oct of Junior year and was way ahead of many peers and had a decent score while many others did not have one.
