Hi! I am thinking of transferring from a university to a conservatory for viola performance. I really like my private teacher at my current university, but I am just not getting the musical education I want. How do I talk to her about transferring? I don’t want to offend her. Thanks!
First it’s about you not her. Secondly, why not have an open discussion on what you want and expect. Many music majors also study with a variety of people to get different perspectives. That might be the approach I would take. Also, most arts like music is a much smaller community then you might think. Never burn bridges. You might “need” this person in the future.
Are you at a school of music and in a BM program where you are? If not, it is easy to explain a move to a conservatory because it is a different degree and you could say your priority has become taking most of your classes in music (a BA is 1/4 music and a BM is 3/4 approx.) . So there is no reason for the teacher to take it personally if that is the case.
If you are transferring from one BM program to another, maybe look carefully at courses and teachers. In that case you should also be able to come up with an explanation that does not relate to your current teacher.
Yes, I’m currently in a BM program and looking to switch to another one. Thanks for your suggestion!
