How to talk to professors during office hours?

I know this sounds so silly, but I have the hardest time talking to my professors during office hours, particularly when I am doing well in the class. I have a hard time coming up with meaningful questions to ask and I feel like I just seem incompetent. I am really excited about my major and though I've hit a few bumps in the road and switched majors a few times I will need some profs to write recs for me for grad school.

What do you usually talk to your prof about during office hours? How do you build trust/show them that you're really enthusiastic and worthy of a good rec?

I really don’t understand the whole office hours thing. Don’t go if you don’t have anything to talk about. If there’s research you’re interested in, go to them with a specific idea and see what they think about it. If you don’t have anything to talk about, don’t waste their time. Most professors will write a good rec for someone who has done well in their class, regardless of how well they know you.

What year are you? Most upper level courses are smaller and you shouldn’t have much trouble getting the professor to notice you if you’re doing as well as you say you are.

I agree with the above poster. If this is a large lecture class (and/or a lower level course), chances are it’s not the type of class where you’d get a letter for rec from the professor.
