Hi, I'm currently a student at Bellevue college interested in studying computer science. I'm also interested in attending the university of Washington in two years, despite hearing of the rigorous admissions for its CS program. This is my first quarter at BC and I'm not in any clubs nor do I have a job. In high school, my stats were

ACT: 28 composite (32 English, 29 math, 28 science, 22 reading) taken only once
GPA: 3.62, 3 APs (had a 3.7+ all years besides freshman)
And attended 2 clubs, so weak ECs.

The quarter's ending at BC, so here are my grades currently: (16 credits)

CS 210: A
CHEM 140: A
MATH 151: B- (will definitely rise to at least a B, I stumbled this quarter and I used to have all As in math)

Anyway, I've never held a job nor internship before. How can I maximize my chances to be accepted to the UW next year?

I transferred from SSCC to UW without doing anything outside of class. The good thing is I had an overall GPA of 3.93 for 90 credits. I was lucky to get in. What I recommend you to do is get a high GPA in your classes and find maybe one or two things to do outside of class, a job is fine. Your chances will likely to increase much more if you have 90 credits or more before admission for the quarter you apply.

You might want to get 3.5 or above since grading over here is a little harder. I usually get mostly 4.0s and now I have around 3.7 for my average.

About computer science, I’m not trying to discourage you, but the CSE program at UWS is extremely competitive, people that 4.0ed their CSE 142 and 143 classes at the UW can’t even get in. Even some of the TAs for computer science classes can’t get in. If you’re dead with computer science, I recommend you to research on other schools as back up, such as UW Bothell, UW Tacoma, or Seattle U. There are alternate majors at the UW that are somewhat be similar to CSE, such as Informatics or Applied and Computational Math Sciences. You might want to look into those majors to find if they interest you.

I’m not majoring in CSE but that was my first choice. If you want to know more information about CSE at UWS or about the alternate majors, message me. :)

Thanks for the reply, cleared up some smoke. I’ll be sure to look into any alternatives for my studies :).

Hi Kevin. I am a student from BC and plan to transfer to UW in fall 2014. My major is CE and I know it is competitive. My overall GPA is 3.91 and my prer GPA is 3.85 without two CSE classes. Do you think I get a chance to get in? And I wonder what is your major cause you mention your first choice is CS and I assume you are rejected. (Sorry it may sound harsh, lol). I plan to list EE as my second major because it looks less competitive compared with CE. Thank you very much
