I was waitlisted by my dream school (Emory) and I want to write a LOCI to boost my chances of getting off of the waitlist. However, I don’t have any new accomplishments or updates, just that I’m a Nat. Merit finalist and have a burning love for Emory University lol. Should I even write one? What can I say if I don’t have anything new to provide them?
Thanks for your help!
It’s a “Letter of Continued Interest”, not an “Update Letter”. Although people do list their new achievements, its primary purpose is to boost your demonstrated interest. Schools want to protect their yield, thus they would admit students who are more likely to enroll. If Emory is really your dream school, then show your passion through the letter. Talk about how you would absolutely attend the school, if given the opportunity. Stress on the programs offered by the school that you would love to be a part of. Just show your love for the school. All the best!
Agree with above. Send your most recent grades too.
In terms of an update, it can be anything relevant, but not useless. So “I have just secured a summer job doing…” is relevant. Letting them know you achieved something important is relevant: “I have completed and submitted my project for Eagle Scouts.”
Perhaps saying “I continue to practice piano” is not relevant. But this is a good thing to add: “I approached the program director at the local senior center and will be playing for the residents three hours a week.”
If you have something to add that is relevant to what makes you a good applicant, that’s what can go in your LOCI.
Yes, don’t give up. Tell Emory what you want to do for them if they let you in. They want to know how you will make their campus better. Best of luck. You are an amazing student.
