I just need a format...

Dear Mr/Ms/Mrs/Dr. EC,

I hope you are having a wonderful summer! My name is NETKING and I was recently given your email address from MyMIT to contact you for an admissions interview. blahfillerblah I look forward to receiving an email from you regarding our interview location and time.

Thank you for your time…
Sincerely,
NETKING

Make a good first impression and be professional. You can be more informal after the first message and as you get to know your EC more personally.

I would recommend keeping it short and to the point.

Absolutely. Short is not a bad thing. Anyone who is an EC is expecting to get e-mails from prospective students looking to set up interviews in the second half of the year. Those who write e-mails telling me that I am an EC, or those who write long rambling e-mails talking about the glorious history of the interview as a form of interpersonal communication start off at a disadvantage.

do they take your input into account for when to schedule the interview (if you play a sport or something)?

Is it too early to start sending these emails?

Hopefully, you’ll be able to find a time that’s mutually agreeable for you and your EC. If you’re pretty constrained time-wise, it might be a good idea to mention that in your initial email.

If your EC’s contact information is up on MyMIT, go ahead and contact him/her. It’s certainly not necessary to contact your EC now, but, generally, earlier is better.

So I just signed up to be an interviewer, and am all excited to hear from my first applicant. Of course, I’m sure the novelty of this will wear off quickly. :)

But generally, your EC will know that the application is up and that there are students who will soon be accessing their information- so no worries, they’ll be expecting you.

Also, note that scheduling a bunch of interviews - and time to write up reports afterwards - is made easier when people get the information earlier :P
