Hi CC!

I'm known for being an outgoing and energetic person--rarely do I take too somber of a tone when writing emails or letters. However, as I move towards the recruiting process and send out emails to coaches, I was wondering (in your experiences) what sort of emails expect/want to receive. I want to show my coach my personality over mail, but my guess is that that isn't too formal (for example "hi coach!"). How should I address a coach professionally while showing that I am not wooden as my email may imply?

Thanks!

If by wooden you mean brief and straightforward, then imo you should sound wooden, at least at first. The coach is interested in your proven ability as an athlete and your academics, not your personality at this point. How you will relate to him or to the team will matter some later, when you meet coaches in person on unofficial and official visits.

How to address a coach professionally? How about Coach __________ and fill in his or her last name. Then look at how they sign their return e-mails to you, that should give you a better idea how they would like to be addressed. Coaches are used to dealing with high school athletes and we have found them to be fairly informal, but it’s best to start out more formally. My D tends to use more exclamation points than I would. I agree with the brief and straightforward part.

You can mess around with this but essentially this is a functional introductory email … Go easy on the exclamation points :)

My current SAT scores are 2100 (CR X, M X, W X)and my current unweighted gpa is 3.6. I had four Honors AP classes junior year and will have another four senior year. I took the SAT2 and ACT this month and am still waiting for scores which I will be glad to report by email and have them sent officially when possible.
I do (these interesting activities such as A and B) but my main focus has been my sport.

I am attending these camps / combines this summer where I notice that a coach from your college may be present and could take a look at me in person.

I have junior video up at (Internet link).

I would be pleased to hear from you if you think I might be a good fit for your college and could make a valuable contribution to your team and program.
