how to write your gpa?

sorry if this is a stupid question, but i'm a little confused. my school weights gpas with the maximum possible being a 5.0 (nobody's ever gotten this, and only 2% of the school get over a 4.5), and my weighted gpa is a 4.36, which i think would look better than my unweighted since i've taken basically all honors and ap classes. however the common app asks for the number, then what it's out of, then if it's weighted or not. so should i say it's on a 5 point scale or a 4 point scale? technically it's out of 5 but i feel like if i put out of 5 and weighted, a 4.36 is going to look really bad even though it puts me well in the top 10% of my class. i'm just a little confused about how everything goes together for the gpa reporting- could someone try to explain it to me?
thanks for your help :)
