How tough is BME?

made a small post w/in someone else's thread earlier but I'd appreciate a closer look.

First off, I realize that there are only 100 people accepted into Biomedical Engineering each year so that must include Honors students as well as normal students. Are most of the people in the program already Honors (pretty much asking if I need to be Honors material to get in to BME)?

I'd also really appreciate my 'chances'.

Currently a Junior at public high school near Dallas
Rank: 12/497
GPA: 5.396 (weighted, not given unweighted)
SAT: 1st Take- 1420/1980 M:760 CR:660 W: 560 :(
2nd Take- 1400/2050 M:710 CR:690 W:650
Will take an ACT and SAT II's later. Slotted for June 2 SAT.

Schedule-
Sophomore: AP World History (rest Pre-APs and 1 Regular Class)
Junior: AP Chemistry, AP English, AP Computer Science, AP US History, AP Art History, Pre-AP Latin IV, Pre-AP Physics, Pre-AP Calculus
Senior: AP Calculus BC (if it doesn't make then AB), AP Physics C, AP Government, AP Micro Economics, AP English, AP Statistics, AP Psychology, and AP Biology (may drop Psychology before then)

EC's are weak :(
JV Tennis 9/10 Grade
Latin Club 9-11 (Sophomore & Junior Rep)
and 50ish hours with church, 130 hours at non-profit hospital (another 60-70 this summer)

I'm not really asking to get into Honors, but really if that's what is pretty much required of BME applicants.
I'd also love to have any suggestions for other colleges (safeties or reaches) that have a good engineering program that may match my scores (UT is definitely my first choice in any case.)
Thanks again for any responses!

you’re definitely into the school, I’d say you’re probably pretty much into the biomedical engineering as well. I’m not sure about honors though. Good luck :)

I thought I had a really strong application to the Engineering Honors Program this year, but I didn’t get in. When I asked the director why, she let me know that since I didn’t have a 1500/1600 SAT (I had a 1440/1600 and 2140/2400), my application wasn’t even looked at. I’m sure it’s different from year to year, but just a heads up that they seem to put way to much emphasis on SAT scores.

I got into biomedical engineering but not into engineering honors cause my SAT scores were only 1970. so as long as you can get that rank and extra credit up, you’re in good shape. I’ve heard that BME is one of the toughest if not THE toughest engineering major at UT

Brian. I had a 1430/1600 SAT and got in to honors for engineering. Although I have a high ACT(34) and SAT II’s (1560/1600).

I think it might depend on the field of engineering. Also, they probably converted your ACT score. Congrats!

hey henry, thanks for responding again! I was afraid that since BME is so small the majority of actual students would be Honors. btw, what was your SAT score out of 1600? on math, crit reading?

has anyone else here been accepted to BME? thanks

the crit reading was my weakest at 540 :X but my math was 740

My son got into BME, but did not apply for scholarships and was not offered Honors. He is in-state, with a SAT 1400, 20/630 rank, 32 ACT, 10 APs, lots of extracurriculars, but zero math/science awards. Hope this helps you. Other engineering schools: Bucknell, Lehigh, Villanova, and Santa Clara. He is still deciding!

Just a quick note about BME. A lot of BME’s really don’t know how much Electrical Engineering you guys actually have to take. Your degree is literally half EE for the first couple of years, so if you plan on going to med school, you are going to have a lot tougher route than those as Bio majors. Although with Biomedical Engineering and a Medical degree it can open up some pretty cool doors with all the Biotech research going on now.
