How bluntly will they call you out for microagressions? How violent can the student body get? Is it anywhere close to what happened at Berkeley?
Please keep in mind that what happened at Berkeley 1) involved a lot of people not actually part of the campus, 2) those students involved represented a very small subset of the campus population, and 3) was so 2017-2018.
I am at a pretty “far left” college. Never seen violence. Only see people “called out” when they’re being blatantly racist or homophobic or sexist or transphobic… which is rarely (though mostly they fall into transphobic).
This past semester, I taught a class which tends to pull people from both the right and left. It’s an unfortunately named course in that regard (in that the name doesn’t really match the course). Everyone seemed to get along and discuss controversial, sensitive things civilly.
I’ve never heard anyone on my campus express right wing views except at one event that was specifically held by college republicans.
I got jokingly called racist by a coworker once for asking why he thought the “important” films to get awards are the ones that star minorities and women (as opposed to the content and quality of the film and acting). Was awkward, especially cuz I’m a girl and he called me racist but not sexist, but that’s about it. No one really openly supports right wing ideas here, at least not that I’ve seen in my year here.
My school is definitely one sided, but not toxic yet. I almost never express my libertarian or right-leaning views unless I’m in the company of people I know are also right-leaning or tolerant to other ideologies. Our student government always pursues left-leaning projects, like the project to put free tampons in ALL bathrooms on campus (all meaning the women’s, men’s and gender neutral rooms).
That being said, I wouldn’t say it’s not terribly toxic. Recently a resolution to join the BDS movement was met with significant pushback from the student body that shut it down for the time being.
Overall, the political climate is toxic in the way that ideological diversity is far from encouraged and I feel uncomfortable speaking my mind, but conversations do still happen.
Not entirely sure how making sanitary products available in all bathrooms is a left-leaning project but OK.
@romanigypsyeyes That men have periods too is a socially left wing idea. I think the example illustrates the point well, whether or not you approve of the project.
I believe that my college is mostly left winged, but there are some people that support the right side as well.
I think it usually starts to “act up” around the election when some of our students draw with chalk on the sidewalks and walkways displaying their thoughts and opinions of the current presidential situation.
