I have been in art classes since 8th grade and am going to be a Senior next year. For the past 3 years I have been taking the usual “AP Art Path” at my school, but never had any plans of art school. I am hesitant if it is worth the hassle next year. I love art and am supposedly a top in my class, but I don’t want a career in it. I still would like to make a portfolio for regular college, if possible. Is AP Art worth it? Just askin’
I say do it! I think that many colleges don’t accept AP Studio Art as credit, but having a strong art background will definitely help, even if you’re not going into art: many things connect back to design and visual creation.
It will (most likely) be worth it if you plan on making an art portfolio as a supplement in college admissions… it’s kind of a “prep” for that, so if you think you have enough time on your hands, do it!
It is definitely unique because not THAT many people do it. Compare it to AP English Lang and it seems minute. That is not a bad thing, though, because it gives a sense of differentiation. If you are good and enjoy art, take it.
What classes are you giving up to take the art class?
If you don’t want to major in art or a career which involves art it may be better to take a language, science, math course instead. AP Art isn’t usually counted for college credit at many schools while other AP courses may be counted for college credit which ultimately saves on tuition.
You don’t have to have AP Art to create a portfolio as a supplement.
