How useful is B.S. in Biochem?

I tried searching for this but couldn't find what I was looking for. I was wondering how useful is a B.S. in Biochem like what kind of jobs can I get, are there a lot of openings for it in the Southern California area etc. I wanted to go into Bioengineering/Biotechnology but that major is impacted so Biochem seems like the closest alternative. I also don't plan on going to get a graduate degree.

biochem!!! man you got to be kidding, Clinical labs are begging to lab assistants and If you got a bit of clinical experience, you can earn a decent living working in hospitals.

Biochem is seriously wanted out in this world, you should definitely try to get as high of a degree as possible… that way when a job opportunity comes up you can do better than whats expected… resulting in… higher pay maybe? Definitely go for biochem there are a lot of hospitals out there looking for biochemists to study cancer and other vaccines for viruses you could get an awesome job…

I planned on going biochemistry myself and already am planning on attending medical school. I can’t wait to get into the biochemistry curriculum. I highly doubt that biochemistry will ever be viewed as useless.

I am not going to lie… biochem is not very employable. Most biochem majors go to med school. If you want to work in industry, you can. However, you will have to do a lot of mundane work like cell culture and running gels. These things are not fun. Advancement with only B.S. in biochem is nearly impossible as most of the research scientists they hire will have PhDs as they have been trained to think like researchers. From experience hospitals will hire lab techs with only a B.S. to work for a PI. However, these jobs will mostly be ~30K and will involve the same mundane work along with maintaining the lab… ordering reagents and stuff. Most people who are lab techs are trying to beef up their resume for graduate school. In short, biochem is just not very employable. I don’t know where these phantom jobs come from that they talk about… but they really don’t exist.

Yes ^ I know somebody who graduated with BS in Biochem and found few job opportunities.
