How UT Chooses (not top 10%) Students

^ UT's average ACT scores are 24-29, so about a 27. But those scores are for mostly the top 10% students who are automatically admitted. Aim for at least a 29 to have a better chance.
UT doesn't care at all about your GPA, only your class rank, so I'd say with a 29-30 ACT and top 15% with some great essays, you'd have almost a 50/50 shot. Be prepared to get CAP'ed. I know I am. :/

Is UT-Austin really that great a school? What makes it so great?

We are an out-of-state family, and my d got National Merit semi-finalist. One option is to attend U.T.-A. and pay in-state tuition.

My d wants to major in chemistry.

I know how high U.T.-A is ranked in USNWR rankings, but I just wonder if their chemistry dept is top-notch, if anyone knows.

Secret Texas code I have learned:
UTA is UT Arlington.
Austin is UT.
:)
My daughter chose UT because it has one of the top programs in the country in her relatively unusual major and because she really likes enjoys live music of a wide variety of genres and because when she visited campus and sat in on classes, UT really just "clicked" with her and became her top choice. She loves it there. She's in a number of clubs and in the Liberal Arts Honors program, and she's made some really great friends. I suggest your daughter visit campus and sit in on a class or two in the chemistry department.
My daughter's roommate (in the honors dorm quad, which are nice) is in Deans Scholars and she likes that program very much. Deans Scholars would be a good thing for a chemistry major.
The college publicizes opportunities for undergraduate research at the information sessions I have been to, so they pride themselves on this. That woudl be good for a chemistry major.

Okay thanx! Not sure about a 30, but I'll try!
if i am CAP'ed then I'm picking another school. It's not worth it. I don't like any other undergraduate schools in Texas. I might as well join the other 10 000 Texas students and apply out of state. Maybe Michigan State or George Washington.
