How Valuable Has CC Been To You?

Okay, this is directed towards all the people who are regular members of CC. Do you think all the advice, information, and help you have gotten from CC has helped you in a big way, and that it has made you a much better college applicant? I'm interested in the responses.

Well, it's made me more stressed, seeing the competition and everything. But I have learned more about the college admissions process from this site.

I have learned a lot more generally about colleges and the application process. The "What are my chances?" (WAMC) threads and the college life forum in general are useless. Worse still, the WAMC threads are not only not respresentative of college applicants in general including ivies, but they are also the kinds of threads which stress people out who are applying to college. WAMC threads and "Look at my stats (lol)" do more harm than good.

I have found that CC helps ease my stress about college because I can talk about it issues that I probably wouldn't bring up with my friends at school. Regarding the WAMC threads, I have found that you can get much more thoughtful and I might even venture to say useful responses by posting them in the specific college's forum.

CC has been a God-send for me. I learnt so much. Of course, you can't take everything written on this board as 100% reliable. It is public board, exchange of views lets people see several sides of an issue and then form an informed judgement.
I feel more confident about where my chances lie. I have received a lot of tips about how I should maximize my chances. Thanks everybody!

I only really discovered CC after I applied to universities so it didn't help me their but it did help me understand the admission process more.

CC is very helpful. It helped me to become more stressed, nervous and uncalm person!

Very helpful site. It gets me wondering why some people spend hundreds to thousands of dollars for counseling information you can get easily on this site.

absolutely not, i wish I had never found this site.

(i'm serious btw, but now i'm addicted, and i can't stop coming here)

Well I purposely avoided coming to site until I was well done with college applications and all because I feel that too much stress is created on this site, but w/e, though nonetheless I think that there is plenty of information that many people can learn from, but personally I wanted to apply blind to all my schools without knowing all the little inside tricks and so on, but I guess that's just me.

I moved to the US from Europe in middle school and didn't know anything about college admissions, and my college counselor at school keeps feeding me misinformation. Having found CC, I feel terrified and unprepared, but at least I know exactly what it is I'm terrified about and unprepared for, as opposed to a more general feeling of impending doom. It's certainly addictive (I had 1500+ posts on my old username), but the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, I think... as long as you stay clear of the "chances" forum.

cameliasinensis, what country in Europe?

CC has been very valuable to me, especially since the prep school admissions forum came around. I've learned so much more. Not just about the prep school process, but just every day stuff.

Thank you CC! lol.

Jonathan, I'm Swedish.

Awesome.

Do you like it better there or here in the U.S.?

I've lived in DC for five years, which is longer than I've lived anywhere else (I lived in Moscow and Brussels before I came to Stockholm), so the US definitely feels like "home" much more than Sweden does. I still spend time in Sweden every summer, though, which is really nice.

To me, this site has been a great stress reliever...it was nice to just chat with people in the HS life and Stanford forums (back when I applied SCEA last fall). I came to terms quickly that my chances there were a toss up, and that didn't bother me because the I knew the decision process after admissions would be easy (just followed the money)...and now I'm sharing the excitement with all the 2010'ers on the site and dropping advice whenever I can for the younger members.

My advice for the stressed out people is not to buy into the hype and stress but to try to come to terms with it.

So do you speak Russian, Swedish, French/German, and English?

I'm fluent in Swedish, English, and French, and halfway intelligible in Spanish; I've studied Dutch and German, but not in much depth; I spoke Russian as a toddler (I had a Russian nanny) but don't anymore. I'm a classic diplomats' kid. :p

Since I found this site after I was already in college, its just a place for me to **** around. If I'm bored late at night and not tired I'm on...if I'm packing for college but dont feel like packing (now) I'm on...or if I'm at work, which is terribly boring. I ask the occasional queston in my college forum, but other than that...nada

it helped me sooo much. this site came to me when I needed it the most... senior year during the application season. Without this site, I would have been so clueless and lost. Even now, I'm getting some help and I'm also giving some back as well. This site has been wonderful and just really, really great:)
