How was I not at least deferred (at Wharton)?

I remember that this student who gave our on-campus presentation on Wharton told us that it’s not so much that we had business extracurriculars, but that we show the raw skills necessary for success in business, like strong math and leadership skills. Regardless, I’m pretty depressed right now.

does spanish count as hispanic, and as URM? thought it was just a white european

I always thought of my Spanish side as white before filling out the common app, but in order to indicate Spanishness, I had to check hispanic, then check Spain.

wow. this year’s results are indeed sporadic. i got accepted, and my SAT was a relatively low 2170 (but my ACT was 35). i even got 4s on all my APs. i think it was my income level (60k combined household) and my hook (first gen college student).

i was shocked i got in. and i am shocked you didn’t. i mean, i had barely any community service at all.

radco, did you do Wharton or CAS?

wharton :)

Well, your 35 ACT was better than your 2170 SAT.

I don’t think your being rejected has anything to do with being inadequate - I think UPenn just felt that you were not a fit for them or it just wasn’t your time. I’m sorry.

^ I agree. If they rejected you, that doesn’t mean every other place will, too. Find your match and you’ll be fine.

Well, I really think my essays showed why I loved the school.

The key thing you should try to focus on now is to mentally condition yourself to move on.Its understandable to be shocked/angry under the circumstances.Try to muster the energy to forget about Wharton and focus your many strengths on other colleges, many of which will be more than happy to welcome you to their college.Hold fast.

You sound as if you’re entitled to get into Wharton because of showing up to school sick one day. Plenty of my friends got rejected and how stronger numbers than you. Just accept it and move on.

you apply to a business school without even a little experience in business and are angry about not getting accepted? yes, i know it can be hard to get some experience, but then again maybe business school is not right for you if you are not seeking chances to get involved.

however, i do sympathize with you in the fact that you were not even deferred. you have an excellent application and i can assure you that you will be successful at other schools.

like people have kind of said, there could have been some major flaw, whether it be your essays (don’t portray you well, or show a lack of knowledge about school–penn appetite, etc.), a negative teacher recommendation, or something else.

i’m sorry you are upset, but i wish you luck where ever your next step takes you.

Ok, what makes you think you deserve to be accepted? or waitlisted?
How are you even special???
What have you done that is business related? I don’t see anything special in EC’s. Eagle scout is impressive, but hardly unique. You play an instrument - like half a million other kids.
Your numbers aren’t exceptional. Actually, they’re just average. An 800 in math doesn’t redeem a 2230. And two low 700’s on your SAT II’s? I’m sorry. You know have no right to complain. I don’t mean to be this harsh, but come on… this is Wharton.

^well what about CAS, 2200
low 700 sat II’s
great Ec’s, top leadership in 4 of them, research + summer programs
Rejected…not even defferal

nvm…it seems penn is stat driven this year.

Just to correct people before me, you don’t need to have any business whatsoever to get into Wharton.

Well, I didn’t make my passion for business as apparent as I probably should have.

college admissions are really luck of the draw :frowning: just depends who reads your apps, at least everyone knows that… so the rejection doesn’t say anything to whether your smart or not… college admissions are getting more and more uncertain… but hopefully everything will work out in the end!

Surprisingly it seems like SATs are inversely accepted this year. I’ve seen just as many 2100s as 2300s accepted. I think after a certain level they all get pile together in the admission’s mind and they go to subjective stuff. Well, unless you have a 2350+, then you might be given special attention.

i agree with Poeme. it is possible your essays were overedited/overprocessed. :\ it’s about penn choosing who they want, not you molding yourself into a penn student, if that makes sense. and from the looks of cc, it seems penn didn’t really differentiate between 2150s and 2350s this year. penn really seemed to look for passion and leadership this year.

also, i found it interesting that you listed your majors as math, econ, and chem. no business or finance? i think i did business, finance, history for mine. didn’t seem like wharton cared very much about math SAT, math competitions, etc this year (not sure about past years though).

don’t dwell on penn though. time to move on, learn from your mistakes, and i hope you will find some other college will be right for you and you for them. good luck!
