I'm sure we've all seen the bridges built by the people of the Amazon, but does anyone ever realize the amount of thinking and work that must go into building these small yet vital bridges? The bridge in this picture looks new, but they were first built long before their creators had the technology we do now.

Does anyone ever figure out how someone with only the natural resources around them could build such a bridge? Think about it. There was no bridge before, and the other cliff isn't exactly in arm's reach.

After pondering about it, I think the bridge was built this way:
1. One guy carefully climbed down on cliff, crossed the river (or whatever is below the bridge), and climbed up the other cliff. With him he carried a very long vine. On the side of the cliff where the first guy came from there was someone holding the vine.
2. The vine was secured in place on both sides.
3. The first part of the bridge was in place. Now, someone could get to the other side by hanging onto the vine and a second vine with him to make the second part of the bridge, or step 1 could have been repeated.
4. The planking was then very carefully put in place.

An alternate way to get the first two vines in the bridge up would be to get another guy to travel many miles to find a way across, then have him walk on the other side of the river to the future bridge location, and have a guy on the side he came from throw him a vine. However, it would require very good throwing skills and determination.

So, how do you think this bridge was built? Do you agree with me, or do you have an alternate theory or know for sure how these bridges were built?

I'm posting this here because there are some very intelligent people lurking in these forums.
