How was your experience as a student at Stanford?

hey guys, I’m just wondering about the student life, atmosphere, little interesting facts, and everyday life at Stanford / what people actually attend there

Stanford, socially, is amazing. Simply put. As a group, Stanford students can be characterized as fun-loving, adventurous, creative, diverse, and, most interestingly, humble. I have been more impressed with my peers than with anything else at this university. Freshmen year the social life is primarily focused on dorms. You have a week of bonding through NSO, and then quirky events all through the year. On any given weekend, someone will be having a pre-game to a Row party in their dorm, someone will be staying in and playing games, and someone will be going out to dinner and a concert in SF. People start to build additional communities through clubs, sports, volunteer groups, and other academic/social/religious/ethnic communities.

Sophomore year people start to split into greek life / co-ops / self-ops / dorms. Most people start to find their niche community a little more, and spend more time investing in these groups. However, whether you are at a fraternity party, a co-op rave, a kick back in Bob or a student performance, you will find a mix of all different groups. Sure, you might see more Synergy people than Sigma Chis at EBF on a wednesday night, but you’ll definitely see both.

Junior year everyone is a bit scattered, as people go abroad, staff, or just generally have isolated housing. This serves two purposes though; you start to care more about your academic experience and your larger Stanford group as opposed to your individual community

Senior year you know who your friends are. They are usually a mix of your niche communities and a lot of other spaces on campus. The whole class is united by senior nights, and the “last” of everything - the last FMOTQ, the last football games, the last band run, the last nomad, the last wine-and-cheese at Kairos, the last beer-and-pretzels, the last Exotic Erotic, the last KA Darty, the last, the last, the last, and finally, Wacky Walk.

Walky walk epitomizes Stanford to me. With their group of friends, whether that comes from academic experiences, freshmen year groups, sports teams, or greek/co-op houses, people come up with bizarre costumes to wear instead of traditional graduation robes. While part of a smaller group of friends depending on community, everyone is part of the quirky and silly atmosphere together.
