How was your freshman year at NYU?

Hey everyone. I'm a prospective Stern student and I'm just looking for some input from current NYU students on what their first year was like. I love the city, but I've never lived there and I really just want to get a sense of what the experience was.

Thanks!

If you’re not used to an urban environment you’re probably going to experience the sensory overload that makes well, a new yorker a new yorker. Can’t really say much because I grew up in new york

Agreed with the above. It’ll be the most challenging period in your life because of the adjustment process, but once you get through it, you won’t look back and you will call, think, and love the city as home. It depends on the type of person you are, but if you adapt quickly, you’ll have the best experience of your life here.

I grew up in the city as well, but I do think that just suddenly being thrust into a dorm of people my age who were not from NYC made me just as wide eyed and eager to show them around as they were to see everything. The one thing I have to say about it is do not let yourself get overwhelmed by how much there is to do here. My first semester I was out with friends constantly, and my grades reflected that. Once I settled down I did a lot better.

That said, I also don’t think freshman year is representative of your overall experience. Freshman dorms tend to be much more friendly and feel like family, and it’s not until sophomore year that you’re really thrust out into the city with only a handful of your closest friends. My freshman year was great in some ways, but I also remember being depressed for a lot of it because I was adjusting. Sophomore year has been a much better experience overall.

^^ Agreed completely.
