Would a person be considered annoying if they threw in two or three math jokes here and there (I don't mean per question, just overall)? I know MIT is very math/science oriented so I assumed the admissions committee would enjoy them.

No, they won’t get annoyed. If it’s a really interesting/funny one, include. But take note that math jokes probably come up a lot

i think jokes can occasionally be good but not if you seem like you’re trying to hard. or stupid. like “HEY WHATS NEW? C OVER LAMBDA HAHAHA”

@MStocksl: I would consider that Physics, not Math. :P

lol @Mstocksl

i was going for something a little subtle like “i’ve met an uncountable, non-compact set of people in my life”

Go with the old e^pi - pi = 20 joke.

I’d keep in mind that not everyone at MIT is a mathematician and certainly not everyone on the admissions committee is going to know set or topology theory. You definitely don’t want your joke to doubly backfire by not only not being funny but also making the reader feel stupid! A safe bet would be that if your math joke wouldn’t also make a physicist or chemist chuckle, then it might be a bit too esoteric. I actually riffed off some famous existential literary quotes (The Stranger, The Metamorphosis, etc.) in my essay toward irreverent ends, although there’s no way of knowing how much this affected their decision to admit me :)

no my program has fatal error :<
