Im a freshman in Chemical Engineering, and as the semester unwinds, I'm starting to get a better feel for what my first GPA may be. That being said, I was wondering how everyone else here fared their first semester in Engineering(any discipline). And how did it compare to the GPA of your upper level classes?

Hi
I want to know how you find chem.engg. i am also planning on that next year. what subjects do you study and how many hrs do you need to put in every day. please can you tell me which university you are studying?

I had a 3.3 each of my first few semesters. It got higher as I got to my upper-level courses probably because I put more time and effort since I was interested in the subject matter. Calculus and chemistry were never really interests of mine.

My GPA for each semester ranged from about 3.4 to 3.7. I did well first semester freshman year, and not so well second semester. I did better in my upper division course work because alot of the classes I could choose between a few options, and also choose technical electives. So I got to study what interests me.

PS. Many people struggle freshman year to make the adjustment, including me. I have seen quiet a few people who failed classes freshman year, and stepped up and tried harder later on, and have gone on to become successful engineers.

Mechanical Engineering. Term by Term:

Term 1: 2.5
Term 2: 2.7
Term 3: 3.0
Term 4: 2.9
Term 5: 2.6
Term 6: 3.5
Term 7: 3.6
Term 8: 3.7

It looks sort of strange, but the mistake I made was that I took 4 major required classes each semester in term 4 and 5, and got killed, but passed all. Just learn to balance the coursework out. I just ended up taking way too many classes than I needed, especially at the beginning, I had 2-3 semesters worth of credits more than I needed by graduation.

My worst semester was my first semester where I got a 3.0 (Bs in every class). I felt college was actually a lot easier than my high school and wound up not studying enough for the tests, so I'd make tons of stupid mistakes that I wouldn't have done if I had only practiced a little.

I am a freshman in Computer Enginneering and I am about to finish my first semester. So far I have managed all As. This is somewhat strange since I only got straight As once in High School. I actually think that college is much easier for me than High School because I have more time to dedicate to studying. With a lot of hard work and effort, hopefully I will end my first semester with a 4.0. Having said that this will encourage me to maintain that GPA throughout college.

~3.8

A bunch of review though. My final cumulative GPA ended up being ~3.5. All my quarters were in the 3.25-4.0 range.

I'm probably going to get around a 2.8 this semester...though I don't feel so bad because a lot of my classmates are doing worse. The average GPA is 2.7 and the few upperclassmen that I know also didn't do well (2.6ish) in their first semester.

But I would look at others in your college rather than asking anyone from any college...

Computer Engineering
3.7

Got a C and a C+ my first semester...kind of heartbreaking after straight A's in high school, but it toughened me up. i still ended up with a 3.1 though. Since then its been 3.2, 3.3, 3.5. Will probably go down this semester...

my freshman year GPA sucked major (I think it was below 3.0) because I spent too much time partying and experimenting :)

But then I grew up and did my best in my Junior and Senior year (after some transition time during my sophmore year). End result: I had no problem getting into graduate schools. I think most schools understand that you might screw up a bit during your first year. Everyone goes through it I guess.
