How well does UMich send their students to Med Schools?

How well does UMich send their students to Med Schools? Any data would be great! Thanks in advance

Although Michigan is not the best university at placing students into Medical school, it is quite effective at doing so, especially in the case of qualified students. Students with 3.5+ GPAs and solid MCATs have a very good chance of getting into a medical school of their choice and students with 3.2-3.4 GPAs and average MCATs have an decent chance of getting into Medical school. Annually, roughly 50 Michigan students enroll into Michigan medical school alone. Another 50+ students enroll into other top 10 medical schools. Altogether, roughly 400 or so Michigan students end up enrolling into Medical school. I believe Michigan sends more students to medical school than any university in the nation.

I didn't enroll at UMich as a freshman undergrad, instead I went with CMU, and although CMU does not have a renowned pre-med program, UMich med school is (as of now, at least) my top choice. I know it's really early to be thinking about med school, but a few things concern me about CMU:

-CMU does not place many students into med schools, either because it is not popular at CMU (since it is mostly an engineering/computer science school) or because CMU graduates do not have much luck getting into med school. However, I think it's mostly the former, because CMU reps have told me that CMU-med school acceptances is somewhere around 80+%? (I couldn't find a site actually validating this, but if anyone knows, feel free to post)

-From past graduate survey information, it does not look like CMU has sent any graduates to UMich med school (although they have sent students to other grad schools within UMich)

Is there any insight that could come in handy for a prospective med student like myself? Thanks

P.S.- Between the years 2001 to 2005, it looks like less than 50 CMU graduates have or are in med school now.

KRabbles, CMU, like any top university, will present students with unlimited graduate school opportunities. Keep in mind that the # of students who are pre-med at CMU is very low. I'd say that 50% are die-hard Engineers and another 30% are Business/Econ/arts majors. Only 20% of CMU students major in the arts and sciences, and only a small portion of those are premeds. I would be surprised if more than 100 CMU students even applied to medical school annually. But those students will have all the benefits that a student at any top university will have. All you need to worry about is taking those required classes and maintaining a 3.5+ GPA. The rest will fall into place.

The MCAT is everything. You get an automatic interview at Michigan if you score 36+.

What is the average MCAT score and what percentile is a 36? I'm guessing that's the 99th?

hahaha ONLY a 36....and a 3.5+ at UM is hard for premed dude...not saying its impossible, but believe me, A LOT of work is necessary....a lot of premeds I have made buds with usually have around a 3.2-3.3 but i know a few who are just natural geniuses and can get 3.7+ and what not

UM has rougly a 60% acceptance rate into med school. That is actually very good considering it doe not screen any of its students, as well as it is a public school. Of course there is no garauntee what will happen with you in 4 yrs however, but if you come to UM, the name will definitely help provided you have the grades, 3.5+ GPA 30+MCAT and your good interview to back it up

and yea i think a 36 is 99th...if not 99th definitly 90+ percentile

36 is 99th

My roommate got a 35. He got acceptances to UMich, UCSF, USC, UNC, and got interviewed at Harvard before being waitlisted.

Oh yea, he also got accepted to Dartmouth and Brown as well.

This is an 06' UMich grad

He's obviously going to Michigan right?

He got into brown? They usually don't take anyone because almost their entire incoming class is from their 8 yr BA MD program. UCSF would be the clear choice in my opinion.

UCSF is definitely awesome.

No he's going to UCSF

I went with him last November to interview there... that place is amazing.
