I immgrated from Hong Kong and Shanghai, China, and ever since i was 4, this is what i've heard everyday from the "so-called" middle and upper class:
1.Harvard Students are the smartest
2.Stanford Students are the second smartest but supposely the richest. (obviously not true)
No other American college was really well known until the past five years (when they discovered MIT and UPenn.)

I guess the H-bomb's international prominence is undeniable. It is cool to know middle and upper class Chinese population recognizes Stanford students as the second smartest : ) Anybody from a place where not many students go to the States to study?

I am very impressed by sansai's confidence to speak for three different countries! lol!

let's expand/improve this list!

I'm from Kazakhstan! I'm sure that most of my peers well know Harvard (moreover, i know two Men who is studying there from KZ), MIT, Stanford, Yale. In general, All Ivy league is well known everywhere!

^Hey aibek do I know you? Did you meet a guy living in the UAE???

you people are full of it. stanford is NOT that huge...

harvard, uc berkeley, and MIT are way ahead of stanford so please dont fool yourself and say stanford is as well known as these three...

^you seem to know very little. May I ask who you've asked? I've been over 20 countries and all of them know Stanford. Everyone I have talked to knows Stanford and I live in a town in the Middle East! That's halfway across the world! Don't be so bitter cuz Stanford rejected you k.

Indeed. Please don't assume that your knowledge is equivalent to everyone else's in the world.

i've been to 22 countries...3 in the middle east, so dont feel so special when you brag.

Do you people know how to read English? You people can get into stanford but cannot comprehend a simple paragraph? Thats pathetic.

I never said Stanford is unknown, but you people are hyping it up just because you attend Stanford.

I said Stanford is not as well-known as UC Berkeley, Harvard, or MIT.

Deal with it, because you know its true.

By the way, I didn't apply to Stanford, and I wouldn't attend even if you gave me a free ride. The campus is hideous, the area is yuppy and the weather is -- I'll stop, I could go on forever.

Berkeley is more famous that Stanford? Hahaha you must be kidding. Look its obvious that you don't like Stanford (you must be crazy to not but that's another matter ;) ) but saying that it is not as famous as Berkeley and MIT is (in my experience and those who have contributed to this thread) wrong. I won't deny it is not as famous as the H-bomb though.

ilovecalifornia, it appears that you really want to transfer from your cc to UCB. Is that C in chem discouraging you from applying to Stanford?

I know we're supposedly 'rivals' with Cal but this guy hasn't even gotten in and he's already anti-Stanford!

"The campus is hideous"
Please tell me where have you ever seen a nicer campus? Its beautiful. Someone's already jealous...

ilovecalifornia, I think we would all appreciate it if you refrained from being insulting on these boards. If you want to disagree with an opinion or point out where someone is wrong, fine, but please don't insinuate that we can't understand a paragraph or that we are too stupid to read English. You know that's not true, and it's just mean and unnecessary.

Which colleges are "best known" around the world... this is obviously a matter of opinion and personal knowledge, so I don't think there's much point to arguing which is really more known. There's no right answer for the whole world. It's just interesting to know some different points of view from students from different nations.

...also, what's wrong with yuppy?

good point, celestial. we are just trying get a general idea of how the world knows about stanford based on personal experiences.

haha i just realized University of Pennsylvanis was never mentioned by anybody...
