My college counselor said I have a very good chance of getting into UNC and I'm pretty interested in the school, Kenan-Flagler has a great undergraduate business program and it looks pretty fun. Aside from all that I was wondering how well I'd fit in. Some things to know about me: I live in a more upper class midwest suburb, I go to a pretty small/prestigious private school, I'm black, I'm a varsity athlete, I'm decently smart, I'm very outgoing, and I dress sort of preppy. A few specific questions I have about UNC:
1. How southern is it?
2. How is the social atmosphere?
3. How are the tailgates/ football games?
4. What are the ifc fraternities like/ what is there attitude toward minorities? (sorry if this is a stupid question I'm but pretty interested in greek life and I'm curious about this particular aspect)
5. Are there any cool traditions?
Thanks in advance.

Im in high school but I live less then 2 miles from the Carolina campus and I have a ton of friends who go there so I can hopefully help with you questions.
- Its not as southern as schools like Alabama or UGA, but it has some southern aspects. The weather is crazy in Chapel Hill so be prepared to be out playing basketball one night in 60 degree weather and then waking up the next morning seeing snow on the ground.
- Ill help you hear the best I can, since i dont actually go to the school this is just my perspective, but I personally think it is a great social atmosphere. People are always doing something and there is always something going on.
- As for tailgating, its pretty pathetic here other than at the fraternities. Our football team isnt great but we are always hoping to get better. The games are well attended, but as you hopefully know, its all about Carolina Basketball.
- The greek life is pretty vibrant here. Its not to the point of a lot of the southern flagships, but the greeks always have stuff going on. As for minorities, they are very welcoming here to everyone.
- As for cool traditions, Carolina Basketball is one of the best in the country and is great to watch. We have a huge rivalry with duke and it is often debated as one of the best rivalries in sports. After we have a big win, we storm franklin street and light bonfires and go crazy. Its a really really cool experience. Another cool tradition is "Homegrown Halloween." They close down franklin street and everyone dresses up and goes out and storms the street. Its also a really cool experience.
Hopefully some of this is helpful to you. Carolina is a great school and its a lot of fun. If i had the grades to go I would go in a heartbeat.
