How were your alumni interviews

Please don't tell us things like that. You're only giving fuel to a rampant SUV.

That metaphor was atrocious. What I mean to say is that your special circumstances don't make any of us normies happy. Now look what you've done. I'm crying and screaming. How do you feel now!? Horrible, I hope.

i was never called about an interview... is that bad?

i'm not sure if this is true, but my interviewer told me at the start of myinterview that, to have been contacted for an interview, your credentials (ie. scores, grades, extracurriculars, etc) have been reviewed and have pretty much cleared the first cuts of the admissions process. the interview is a chance for brown to get to know you and your interests better and for you to hear more about brown. again, i'm not sure if this is true because it's just what my interviewer told me so he could have been BSing, but he seemed nice/well-informed/trustworthy enough to be taken seriously about it.

-_-o i'm going to go kill myself now. i really am. nice to know i didnt make it in before dec 12 tho

does anyone know if what jckrss... said is true?

Doubt it, because some people interview in late Oct/early Nov, before apps are really looked at

like i said before, i wouldn't take my word for it--this is second-hand information that you're getting from me. if you're that worried about it, you can call brown admissions and ask them if it's true. and, uh, just in case you're serious, dont kill yourself please.

hows this for wishful thinking
when i was at the information session,
we stayed after for like 15 min to half an hour after everyone else left talking to the admission officer...
my dad said he heard him mumble through something like if he remembered us when he got to the apps that this could just count as the interview...
of course my dad is old and i'm paranoid and his memory could just as well be wishful thinking....

I don't think that's true.

wat i said or wat jckrss said?

I don't think it's true that you don't get contacted for an interview if you didn't make some kind of "preliminary cut."

From what I've heard alumni interviews don't matter much; there recommendation letters don't carry much weight. Is this true?

one of our best family friends is an alumni interviewer for another ivy league school. i flat out asked her the other day what the interview counted for and this was her answer, and i quote "unless the student absolutly blows me away, or is unable to string together no more than a few word answer like so many of those people that are focused on just math and science, the interview is meant to confirm what has been put on the application and act as a time for the student to ask some more specific questions about campus life that a booklet can't answer."

Hello aspiring Brownies,
I am writing to try to ease some fears about the alumni interview process. I am a class of 2004 Brown alum and an interviewer so hopefully you will believe me on the following.
I am Daniel_Rothman@Brown.edu/email

To answer the questions about the alumni interviews:
Everyone is automatically assigned to a regional alumni coordinator who will then pass along the profile to an alum interviewer. Sometimes the interviewer is just too busy (I am in the middle of grad school applications myself and had a hard time fitting in my applicant interviews). Some coordinators do a better job then others and will pick up the extra kids but if there are few alums in your area it might be hard.
Brown instructs us that the interviews are almost entirely informational, and for the benefit of the applicant. (if you are an ax wielding maniac they want to know) I take the time to get to know the kid and figure out what I can tell them about Brown. Being a recent graduate I consider myself quite well informed and just try to be helpful. Last year I interviewed this one kid who I thought was absolutely fantastic and he got waitlisted. I even followed up with admissions on his behalf trying to get him in but he ended up not getting in so went to UPENN instead. There is truth to what the admissions people say, that they could fill three complete freshmen classes with only well qualified applicants. At all top tier schools these days it comes down to if they need a tuba playing Civil Engineer or a karate black belt/English major or if they already have four of each. An important thing to remember is that the college application process is about finding the right school for you. If you don’t get in here but do get in to NYU or Haverford or Tufts or UCSD or any of hundreds of good schools it is not the end of the world and indeed you may find yourself quite happy there.

I loved Brown and am thrilled that so many of you out there do as well. I do not want to be mobbed with people telling me their SATs and GPAs and asking if they have a chance, I won’t know that anyway. If you have applied and weren’t contacted by an alumni interviewer and would like to learn more about Brown send me an e-mail to the above address and I will try to help. (my own applications are due 12/15 so I will have more time to answer questions after that.)
If you get in make sure to come to ADOCH (a day on college hill) in the spring, it was lots of fun.

Be well,
~Daniel

Oooh, good point -- ADOCH was awesome. Definitely helped me decide to come to Brown.

was it also how you decided to by as sexy as you are?

No, I kinda had that figured out already.

This is a bit late, considering we find out Monday, but my interview went really well. The guy was great, called himself a "math geek who works in finance" so he thought it was awesome that I go to a performing arts school. We met in a Starbucks on the Upper East Side and he treated me to coffee (which was sweet of him). We talked for a while, and he told me he had some fellow Brown alums at his apartment a few blocks away who wanted to come and meet me, but they decided against it, LOL. Imagine that? The uber-interview. That would've been sick.

He told me he was going to give me a great report. I probably won't get in, but hey, my interview was fun. ^_^
